An ofuro is a short, deep soaking bath built for sitting upright in deep water rather than reclining. Traditional Japanese bathing separates washing from soaking — you wash first, then enter the bath to soak. Because the bath itself is never used for washing, it can be built for depth instead of length: a shorter footprint, held at a level where the water reaches well above the waist while seated.
